Research firm, iSuppli, estimates that the cost for the components and assembly of RIM’s BlackBerry Storm are just shy of $203 — an estimate that does not include software development, patent licensing fees, physical distribution, marketing or anything else in the product lifecycle. A $35 Qualcomm MSM7600 processor that gives the Storm its dual GSM / CDMA personality is by far the most costly.
For comparison, the per unit cost of the Storms Major Rival an 8GB iPhone 3G is $175, and just $169 for the BlackBerry Bold. The BlackBerry Storms per unit cost makes it harder to capitalize on a profit, and is the least profitable of its peers to manufacture.

You will need to know your IMEI number for your BB. Look at Options, Status. The IMEI may also be found on the white sticker under the battery (sometimes hard to read–make sure you read it right!).
Most carriers will give you the unlock code for your BB. Some have policies that vary from having an active account in good-standing (good payment history) to having been a customer for 90 days or more.
You can purchase the unlock code from various vendors. These listed below are reputable vendors with good feedback from users.
If you purchase an unlock code from an Ebay seller, review the seller ratings.
Unlock codes are particular to each BlackBerry. They cannot be used from one BB to the next. Do not purchase your unlock code from a friend who has one and says the code was for his BB.
Unlock codes can take anywhere from 4 hours to 10 days to obtain.
Some BlackBerrys simply can’t be unlocked for various reasons: The IMEI number cannot be found in the RIM database, or the device was a pre-release, not-to-be-sold device.
It is understood that Rogers Wireless (Canada) will no longer give unlock codes (as of July 10, 2007)
Once you have your unlock code, proceed to these steps:
NOTE: Make sure you follow these or the instructions offered with your unlock code, correctly. If you enter the unlock code incorrectly five times, the device will permanently lock to the carrier to which it is branded.
You must have a SIM card in your phone to complete these steps (Can be active or inactive)
2. Select SIM CARD menu. To be able to see this you have to type this on the keypad on phone : (TEXT WILL NOT APPEAR ON THE SCREEN until you enter the unlock code)
3. Type ‘MEPD’ for all models, except 7100 in which case in case use ‘MEPPD’.
4. Usually you should see “active” NET lock. In order to disable this lock, type ‘MEP2′ respectively (‘MEPP2′ if phone is 7100)
5. The BB will ask for a code. NOTE: You must use the “alt” or “shift” key to enable numbers so example would be: m-e-p-”alt key”-2 Now you should see the place to enter your net unlock code.(if not, you didn’t type in mep2 or mepp2 properly.)
6. Here you must enter the “NET Unlock Code” that you have.
If you were feverishly anticipating a cellphone this year, it was one of two phones: this is the other one. That’s because the BlackBerry Bold is RIM’s most powerful, polished handset ever. With 3G, a glossy new UI, a real web browser, serious hardware and an almost beautiful body, the Bold doesn’t redefine the BlackBerry experience, but it does elevate to the highest point its ever been.
What, you think we didn’t have one before today? While we’re still not sure when you’ll be able to walk into a Rogers store to actually buy the shiny new device like Simon did, today still marks the official launch of the BlackBerry Bold on Rogers. In honor of this special day, we’ve decided to post our exhaustive review, if only to whet your appetites.
And boy, has this day been a long time coming: three years in development, three months since its official announcement at WES 2008, and three times the hype of any other BlackBerry release. The first in RIM’s next generation lineup of smartphones, the BlackBerry Bold has been labeled everything from an enterprise company’s desperate push into the prosumer space to a true iPhone killer. Most of the BlackBerry faithful are just hoping that it turns out to be a worthy merger and evolution of the BlackBerry 8800 and Curve device lines. This review will settle the debate.
Be forewarned, our review of the BlackBerry Bold is fairly large. However, we’ve broken the review down into specific sections for quick and convenient access to the information you seek. Make sure to post a comment to let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, anything else you want to know about, and whether or not you feel RIM’s new flagship device meets the hype.
Let’s be clear: If you hate BlackBerry phones, you will still intensely dislike the Bold. As many coats of polish as RIM has thickly layered on the Bold, it is still a BlackBerry, with all of its suit-and-tie DNA fully intact. Fundamentally, it works and plays just like every other BlackBerry, but with a load of small-to-medium improvements, updates and tweaks that add up to a richer, more refined phone that also looks far better than the rest while doing its thing.
Screen
Yes, the Bold’s 480×320 screen is dazzling enough to warrant its own section dedicated simply to praising it. Incredibly rich and contrast-y with stunning pixel density, it’s so nice you want to touch it. I actually tried to once or twice to hit okay on a dialog box, forgetting that it wasn’t the touchy kind of screen. It almost makes reading the plain text of an email depressing, knowing you could be looking at a gorgeous video instead.
Keyboard
A BlackBerry lives and dies by its keyboard. When RIM diehards countered reckless banter about the death of the BlackBerry per the iPhone’s Exchange support by pointing to the keyboard. After you get used to the slight angle shift in the Bold’s keys, they’re fantastic, like a delicately balanced wine, with a perfect blend of springy, punchy and spongy. The glossy navigation keys are overly large for reasons I cannot quite divine. The backlighting is beautiful.
Body
It’s hands-down the best looking phone RIM has put out, not to mention one of the most attractive pieces of kit on the whole market, even if the clean chrome on black is borrowed from another phone (and we’re not saying it is). It looks like an incredibly modern business device, what you imagine people with more important jobs than you would carry to conduct business that’s more important than yours, while talking to their accountant about how much fatter their bank account is than yours. It exudes power. Welcome to 2008, RIM design department.
It’s larger and wider than the Curve, but it still feels fine in my hands, which aren’t giant-sized by any means. The faux-leather backing, however, is absolutely puzzling, like RIM tried to add a touch of class in the same way Donald Trump’s hairdo gives him a touch of handsome. In other words, it’s fake as crap and feels tacky. Insignificant, really, but it’s actually the thing I hate most about this phone. Nonetheless, it feels rock solid.
Connections
It has everything you want: 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi. Despite earlier reports that it suffered from bad 3G problems, I found that it was more consistent and reliable with its 3G connection. It wasn’t uncommon to grab four bars of signal where, say, the iPhone only saw one. (I realize bars are not standardized or totally accurate, but the disparity between the two was often significant, two or more bars.) In drive-testing, handoff went smoothly. GPS was slower than I would’ve liked, more often than not taking up to a minute to get a lock, and the maps app could be snappier (and prettier) than it is, but it’ll do. At least on AT&T it will immediately have a decent navigator app.
Battery
It’s a champ. Despite lots of 3G browsing, email and other everyday app use, a half charge right out of the box got me through an eight-hour day with no problem. Expect more detailed battery test update later, but all indications are that this thing will last you throughout the day with no problems at all. Way to go, RIM.
Browser
Okay, so there was some controversy about how quickly its browser renders compared to the iPhone. In my tests over Wi-Fi—and believe me, I triple checked to make sure it was on Wi-Fi—it was either tied with, or just behind the iPhone, like the dude who lost to Michael Phelps by a finger tip. The speed difference really is trivial.
It’s the best BlackBerry browser ever (this phone is a lot of “best BlackBerry ______ ever”), and one of the most usable mobile browsers around. In other words, it’s actually usable. Not a miracle. The trackball isn’t the most elegant way to navigate pages—largely because of the zoom metaphor—but it gets the job done, and the vast majority of the time, the Bold shows you pages the way they’re supposed to be. It definitely sets a standard for what mobile browsers should do at a minimum, and it’s fine for light surfing.
Email
What’s a BlackBerry without email? Perhaps wisely, RIM chose to mostly not fix what ain’t broken, adding small but significant tweaks like the ability to see pictures in message, full HTML and attachment viewing. Otherwise, it’s basically the same experience you’re used to. The higher res screen makes the text pop more and adds clarity, but it’s not any prettier, which somewhat stands out against the rest of the overhauled UI.
Media
The Roxio-powered desktop Media Manager still sucks total balls—can you please get a decent integrated manager, RIM? And the music/video setup is essentially unchanged—same menu system and organization—but it has a cleaner, less tacky skin on top that makes it look like it’s greatly improved, even though it isn’t.
But! Watching videos on this thing is a-maz-ing. The sample Speed Racer trailer was so gorgeous and yummy, I almost wanted to watch that 80-car-pile-up of a movie. Almost. The external speaker is surprisingly good, too, with richer sound than most other handsets. Still, this is one of the areas of the phone that needs work—the video quality nearly woos me into giving it a pass—but I can’t emphasize enough how much it needs a decent media manager.
OS & UI
RIM has re-skinned the entire operating interface, shifting from pixel-y, realish bitmaps to slick, almost Tron-like high-res icons that have a neon pseudo-science fiction modernist feel to them. One issue: It’s no longer immediately apparent what each icon does, so expect to hover initially. (With Precision Zen, the theme with splashes of color, it’s easier to discern what icons represent.) I like them, but it’s really an issue of personal taste—still, future skins will benefit from being able to go high-res.
All of the top-level menus have been cleaned up as well, with crisp white text on a black background. It feels nice, and goes with the look of the handset itself, conveying the sense of it being modern and powerful. Unfortunately, when you go into applications themselves—mail, contacts, etc.—or deep into settings, you feel like you’ve entered a time warp three years into the past. It’s like eating a tuna sandwich after a piece of sashimi—the tuna sandwich alone, uncontextualized, is fine, but next to a pure, clean slice of maguro it looks like crap.
Startup on this device has been exceptionally slow—I initially thought my unit was busted or something (maybe it is), though I suppose BBs are always damn sluggish on cold starts. For the for first minute or so after booting, the OS kind of chugs as well, but after clearing the pipes, I guess, it runs totally smoothly, as it should with its speedy 624MHz processor.
Still, overall, it’s the same BlackBerry OS as before, just prettier and running on snappy hardware. If you’re used to a BlackBerry, you won’t have any problems getting around. If you’re not, well, it’s one of the easier mobile OSes to learn and deal with, everything is more or less up front, and on top, at least, it’s pretty.
Conclusion
This is RIM’s best phone ever. Does that mean it’s the phone for you? If you’re a BlackBerry fanatic, yes—it really is the phone you’ve been waiting for, if you’re not hoping RIM radically changed the recipe. Because they didn’t. It’s cleaner and brighter, but it’s not an overhaul by any means. It’s a more powerful and beautiful distillation of the same experience.
For other people who were eyeing it as the time to switch to BlackBerry, the issue is less straightforward. As I said in the intro, it’s coming into a complicated world, where it has more consumer crossover appeal than a flagship RIM device—currently, the 8800—ever has before. (No doubt, even more people are looking at it in light of 3G problems on other handsets, either suit-and-ties who were considering the jump, or people looking for their first high-end smartphone, though more of the former.) At its heart, this thing is a corporate workhouse. It will play movies, music, browse the internet and all of the things consumers usually want—and do it well—but it is coming from a different mindset than the iPhone, something to keep in mind if you’re torn between these two phones.
AT&T has not set a price (or a date for that matter) but we’re hearing that it will not touch the $199 mark when it launches in September. Depending on how aggressively RIM and AT&T want to push it, it looks like it could go as low as $249, but $299 seems more likely, another factor that makes it more suited to corporate than consumer. (Update: We’re hearing that it’s definitely $299, and it will hit September 12.) Still, whichever side you’re on, this is a fantastic phone that perhaps pushes the BlackBerry experience to its peak. The flipside of that is that with its next generation of phones, RIM might have to radically reinvent it to stay ahead of the game.
Occasionally, you will need to reboot your BlackBerry, (e.g. if the BlackBerry seems to get stuck hour-glassing, or doesn’t respond).
Did you know that you don’t have to pull the battery? You can do a quick reset, but press Alt + Caps + Del. This will perform a quick reset, and should be sufficient for most problems.Purpose:
People often don’t know when / how to reset their BlackBerry when they have a problem, this guide will cover the methods, reasons, and order in which resets should be done.
Reason:
There are many reasons to reset a BlackBerry, in general when things are just not working the way they should a reset is likely to correct the problem.
Some possible reasons to perform a reset:
Network Issues
Handheld displays an X beside the coverage indicator
Handheld displays GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) or lower case gprs (General Packet Radio Service) as the network status indicator
User is unable to send or receive messages on the handheld
Software Issues
User receives an error code on the handheld
Applications do not appear to be functioning correctly
Desktop Manager is stuck at “working” status when the handheld is connected
Bluetooth is not detected
Hardware Issues
Handheld display is hard to read. For example, the display shows lines obscuring text
Keypad is not functioning correctly. For example, keys do not work, the trackwheel is not functioning correctly, or the handheld does not turn on
Works on Models:
All models except the 850/857 & 81XX Series
There are four different types of resets, and they should be tried in order:
Power cycle – simply turn the device off, then on
Soft-Reset – Hold down ALT + CAP + DEL
Double-Soft-Reset Hold down ALT + CAP + DEL once the screen illuminates repeat to press ALT + CAP + DEL again.
Hard-Reset – Locate and push the reset button using a paper-clip. Or remove the battery for 30 seconds, then replace.
Performing a double-soft reset stops all applications on the BlackBerry device and is nearly the equivalent of a hard reset. Timing however is critical. Perform a soft reset by pressing the ALT + CAP + DEL keys. The screen will go blank. When the screen is no longer black, press the ALT + CAP + DEL keys again. You should then see another blank screen followed by an hour glass.
Note: This does not apply to the BlackBerry Pearl smartphone.
Note: The BB-7100 and BB-7290 and BB-7520 do not have reset buttons, on these you need to remove the battery (gently) wait a few seconds and then re-insert the battery. Be careful as you do not want to damage the contacts (or get them dirty for that matter).
Reset-Button Locations:
67xx / 95x / 77xx – On the back, at the bottom of the unit (small hole)
62xx / 72xx – Underneath the battery cover (small hole, marked as RESET)
6510 / 7510 – By the battery (small hole)
No reset button:
71xx / 7290 / 7520
BlackBerry 7290 can Perform the Reset after an upgrade to 4.1 OS or later
How to Hack Your BlackBerry’s Network Signal Strenght Display
To accomplish this hack simply, hold down:
the “ALT” key and type “N M L L“
Keep your eyes on the top right section of the video (Network Coverage Strength Display) Poof 1 second its there 1 second its not. Why would you want this? Its pretty straight forward, just that having the live number indicator is more accurate on network coverage.
BlackBerry OS 4.1 or later.WARNING: You MUST have OS 4.1 or later or you may render your BlackBerry unusable! Go to Options -> About to check your OS version.

How to Setup One Touch Keyboard Lock on Your BlackBerry Tested on a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 – 8110 – 8130 – 8300 – 8310 – 8320 – 8800 – 8820
Since all but one Blackberry are not flip phones, it is necessary to lock the keypad before one slips it into his pocket or her purse. When we first got the Curve, we had to navigate to the Keyboard Lock icon and click the trackball to lock.Too cumbersome. Luckily, there is a faster way. It is possible to set the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button so that when you click on it, it will lock the phone.
If you have official BlackBerry Accessories then you wont have to worry about Locking the Keyboard, as the official accessories have built in sensors
Here are the steps to set it up:
From home screen, navigate to the Options icon and click on it
Click the icon that reads “Screen / Keyboard“
Scroll down the entry that reads “Left Side Convenience Key Opens:“
BlackBerry Tips and Tricks – Howto Set Up Speed Dial Numbers Tested on BlackBerry 8100 – 8110 – 8130 – 8300 – 8310 – 8320 – 8800 – 8820 Devices but should also work on other Models -
You can assign a phone number to each of the 26 letter keys. To do that, all you need to do is press and hold a letter key in the Home screen or the Phone screen. If the key has not been assigned yet, it will ask if you want to assign a Speed Dial to the key and you can then choose a number from your phone book. Once a key is assigned, you can dial it by pressing and holding the key.
TIP
You can access the Voice Mail by pressing & holding the “1” key
NOTE – When you enter a phone number in the phone book, you can press the Menu (BB) button and select “Add Wait” or “Add Pause”. Both options are useful if you need to send extra digits after the phone number (e.g. to send extension, password for voice mail or access code for conference call). With the “Add Wait” option, it will prompt you to hit Return before sending the extra digits. “Add Pause” will send them automatically after approx 2 seconds delay.
How to Copy Your BlackBerry Contacts To The SIM Phone Book Tested On BlackBerry 8100 – 8110 – 8120 – 8300 – 8310 – 8320 – 8700- 8800 – 8820 Devices
A SIM card stands for Subscriber Identity Module, on most mobile phones the SIM card is the place where it holds the address book and SMS messages. The SIM card is less important on the Blackberry because the address book is stored on the built-in flash memory or it can wireless sync your Outlook address book. But their may be a time where you want to retrieve the address book off a SIM, especially when you are a new Blackberry user coming from a regular mobile phone and want to import your contacts. We have already told you how to import your whole address book, but here’s how to selectively add a contact to your SIM card:
This ones tricky and depending on how many contacts you have might take a while to accomplish, but if you must have your contacts on your SIM then follow my guide -
Start off by going into the Address Book
Highlight a contact, now hit enter to get into the individual contacts screen
Now hit the Menu key and choose “Copy to SIM Phone Book“
Hit the Menu key and Save it
Easy right? Here is where it gets tricky. In order for this to work you will need to have the Contacts number be stored under the “Work” category. Also, if the contact has multiple numbers, for some reason the BlackBerry wont allow to you to save it to the SIM.
Note: If you receive the message “Not enough room in SIM,” delete the SMS messages on the Phone screen and delete the entries in the SIM Phone Book.

RIM has recently announced the introduction of a new smartphone called the Blackberry Bold. This new offering by RIM will include many new features that have never been offered in the past on any current Blackberry phones. The Blackberry Bold is also the first Blackberry that has 3G HSDPA technology. The resolution on the screen will also be higher than on previous Blackberry models and the addition of support when working with Microsoft Office files will make working with the Blackberry Bold much easier than earlier models.
The Blackberry Gold has a screen size of around 480 x 320, large enough to allow users to use mobile video and read long emails much easier. Because of the larger display area, the Blackberry Bold is somewhat larger than other recent Blackberries. In spite of the increase in size, it is rather lightweight with an easy to operate keyboard. This model is the first to include Blackberry 4.6, the newest version of the Blackberry operating system. The Blackberry Gold also includes a 624 MHz processor and is the first of RIM’s phones to support HSDPA high speed networks, GPS and Wi-Fi.
Up until now Blackberry has been behind the eight-ball in working with Microsoft Office files. Instead of old technology, new RIM smartphones including the Blackberry Bold will utilize the DataViz Documents to Go, a much more stable and premium version among the Mobile Office suites. With Documents to Go you can view documents and presentations almost exactly as they would appear if you were viewing them on a desktop. This is a definite advantage for those who travel frequently and use their Blackberry to communicate with their office as well as clients. Keep in mind that in many cases you can only view Microsoft documents, you cannot change them.
Since the Blackberry Bold is new to the market you will need to search a little more for a Blackberry Bold review. That doesn’t mean there are no reviews available but rather that it will take some time before you will find many reviews on this phone. As you look forward you will discover that once mobile phone deals start to become available for the Blackberry Bold, it will become more popular and Blackberry Bold reviews will become easier to locate.
Blackberry has always been the most well-known among the smartphones but with so many other manufacturers developing their own smartphones, it’s essential for Blackberry to be able to stay competitive and include some features RIM has never included on the Blackberry but that other smartphones have been using since their releases. With the competition so stiff for smartphones, RIM has to enter into the 21st century with its offerings and provide users with more features if they are to remain competitive. The number of “firsts” that are on the Blackberry Bold shows they are on their way to remaining the most popular smartphone on the market in both the individual as well as business sectors.

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl wasn’t exactly a hidden gem. Specs and images of the Pearl (aka the 8100, aka the Stealth) leaked onto the Web about a month ago, and Research In Motion certainly made no secret that it planned to release devices with integrated multimedia capabilities, though it never named a specific product or release date. However, today RIM along with T-Mobile officially introduced the BlackBerry Pearl to the world, the first BlackBerry to offer a built-in camera, video and music playback, and expandable media. While we certainly welcome these additions, the Pearl isn’t offering anything revolutionary; most smart phones today have the same capabilities and offer more functionality, such as video recording.
That said, we think the Pearl’s sleek form factor and new features, coupled with the BlackBerry’s heralded e-mail capabilities, will be a draw for business users and consumers alike. Plus, for T-Mobile customers, it offers a nice compromise between the youth-friendly T-Mobile Sidekick 3 and the more corporate-oriented RIM BlackBerry 8700g. The price is also right at $149.99 with a two-year contract. The RIM BlackBerry Pearl is available in two colors, black or white. For our review, we took a look at the black version. We don’t think we’re going too far when we say that the RIM BlackBerry Pearl is the sexiest BlackBerry to date–it even gives the Motorola Q some stiff competition. It sports a supersleek form factor (4.2 by 2.0 by 0.5 inches; 3.1 ounces) and a polished look with its glossy black-and-chrome finish. It actually reminds us of the Motorola Slvr L7, and its more cell phone-like appearance will go a long way toward attracting a broader audience rather than just business users. Also, with its slimmed-down profile, we had no problems slipping it into a purse or pants pocket, and it felt solid and comfortable to hold up to our ear for phone calls.
The BlackBerry Pearl rocks a 2.25-inch TFT screen that displays 65,000 colors at a 240×260-pixel resolution. Like the rest of the company’s devices, it’s not a touch screen, but it offers a sharp, clear display with vibrant colors and is great for viewing e-mail, images, and Web sites. It also features light-sensing technology, so it will automatically adjust the screen and keyboard depending on your environment; true enough, it adjusted the display’s light so that we could still read it in direct sunlight. You can change the screen’s theme; backlight time; and font size, style, and family. A small LED above the screen illuminates different colors for different status messages: green for wireless, blue for Bluetooth, red for new messages, and amber for low battery. There’s also a mute button on top of the device.
The pearl-like trackball replaces the trackwheel of past BlackBerrys.
Just below the screen, you’ll find the reason why RIM decided to name this BlackBerry after a gemstone: the pearl-like trackball. It’s reminiscent of the one found on the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 and allows for four-way scrolling; pressing it down acts as a select button. (You can adjust the trackball’s sensitivity under the Options, Screen/keyboard menu if you need to change its responsiveness.) The trackball, along with the Menu and Escape buttons that surround it, replace the trackwheel and Escape key that have been mainstays of BlackBerrys past. Having grown accustomed to these controls, we missed having these buttons on the right side for easy one-handed use, and we suspect other BlackBerry users might feel the same way. It’s not that the new setup doesn’t allow for one-handed operation; it’s just different and takes some acclimation.
Volume controls and a customizable shortcut key now reside on the right spine.
With the jog dial and Escape key relocated, you’ll now find volume up/down buttons and a customizable convenience key on the right spine, while a 2.5mm headset jack, a mini USB port, and another user-defined shortcut key are on the left side. By default, the right shortcut key was assigned to be the camera activation button, and we found that to be quite convenient, especially if you want to take a horizontal picture, as it mimics the feel of a stand-alone digital camera. The Pearl’s camera lens is located on the back along with a flash and a small self-portrait mirror.
We’ve never been big fans of the SureType keyboard, and we’re still not. For the uninitiated, this modified keyboard features a traditional QWERTY layout, but two letters are assigned to one key. As you start to enter the letters of a word, SureType technology will present you with a list of possible letter combinations or words based on context. Great in theory, but we’ve found that it can be slow and frustrating because you have to type the letters, scroll to the correct word, then select it. That said, we understand that some concessions have to be made in order to keep a handset like this small, so we’re willing to cut RIM some slack here. We’re a little less forgiving, however, about the fact that the microSD card slot is located behind the battery. It’s a pain to have to take the battery out every time you want to access it, and even Nokia, which has been notorious for this design quirk, has found a way to make it so that at least you don’t have to remove the whole battery, just the cover. Given that this is the first BlackBerry to even offer an expansion slot, you may be thinking we’re nitpicking at this point, but it’s still an inconvenience.
Though we appreciate the inclusion of a microSD slot, we wish it weren’t located behind the battery.
Finally, RIM packages the device with a travel charger, a pair of earbuds, a USB cable, and a desktop companion software CD. There’s no belt holster included with the Pearl, but RIM said this is because it’s such a slim device that it doesn’t warrant one, which we find agreeable. There are, however, belt clips and cases for purchase. The RIM BlackBerry Pearl has generated so much buzz because it represents several firsts for the company. As we mentioned in the design section, the Pearl is the first BlackBerry to offer expandable media, but it’s also the first to have a camera and an integrated media player. Though revolutionary for the product line, these new multimedia features are pretty basic compared to those of other smart phones on the market. Still, we’ll take it over nothing, and we certainly think it’s a step in the right direction and a sign of good things to come from BlackBerry.

To ‘unlock’ your cellphone means to remove the ‘lock’ applied to handset by your current provider. This ‘lock’ enables the network carriers to force you to use only their service even though your phone has been designed by Motorola to be compatible with any network worldwide. The reasons for locking your phone to their network are purely financial and have nothing to do with any limitations of the handset.
We source all our BlackBerry unlock codes, or Network MEP codes, direct from RIM (the BlackBerry manufacturer). Your unlock code is specific to your BlackBerry and it is guaranteed to work without causing any damage, erasing of information or voiding of your warranty.
If your BlackBerry handset happens to be locked, it will display “Invalid SIM Card” where the carrier name is usually displayed when a new SIM card is inserted. It will look like this:
This can be remedied in a few simple steps. First you need to get the unlock code or Network MEP Code for your BlackBerry. This is a unique code assigned to your handset that is stored by the manufacturer.
To order your code scroll to the bottom and select your phone and enter your details including your phones’ serial number (often called an IMEI number). This can be found by pressing: * # 0 6 # (star, pound, zero, pound) on your phone’s keypad. Your serial number will show on your phone’s screen.
Or, turn off the phone and remove the battery. The serial number is printed on a white sticker, as shown below. (Note: You may need some reading glasses – the type is very small!)
Once you have placed your order you will receive your unlock code back by email.
Once you have received this code, start up your BlackBerry and go to options
Then go to advanced options
Then go to SIM card
Now Hold the ALT Key while typing in MEPE (not case sensitive) (you will not see text appear on screen while typing) It will now say “Enter Network MEP Code”, then you type in the unlock code, press in the trackball to confirm
We all like something for free. So, when people see free mobile phone unlocking, it is tempting. But then remember, if its too good to be true, it probably isn’t true. You will pay one way or another.
The cost of free unlocking may be something as simple as voiding your phones warranty. free unlocking also erase of all the data on your phone (including contacts, messages, emails, games and ringtones) or completely destroy your phone.
Costs of Free Unlocking
Permanently Locked: Many phones (including all Nokia, Samsung, LG, Blackberry and Siemens) have a limit on how many times you can enter an unlock code. The limit is usually set to three attempts. After the third attempt you will no longer be able to unlock this phone using any unlock code. Your network provider and the manufacturer will be unable to unlock it. In many cases on the third attempt your phone will be permanently locked to that network.
Erase All Data: Many of these free unlocking codes work by exploiting a bug in some very early versions of phone software. They provide you with a code that will remove the network lock by erasing all the data on the phone. This works on less than 2% of many phone models. If you happen to be in that lucky 2%, it means you have an unlocked phone but no contacts, messages, emails, ringtones etc. However if you are in the unlucky 98% your phone will remain locked and you have just lost all your data for nothing.
Void Warranty: You usually never care about your warranty until you need it. By unlocking your phone using software or using all the unlock code attempts you will void your warranty. You don’t want to lose your warranty and have to purchase a new phone.
Missing Instructions: When purchasing an unlock code with us, you get a full set of instructions as well as customer support. We will assist you each step of the way. If you decide to use an unlock code you found somewhere on the internet, or some unlock software you found on a forum, your won’t get any assistance and you’ll end up wasting hours of your own time trying to understand what you are meant to do and why it isn’t working for your phone.
Unusable Phone: Worst case scenario is you use unlock software that renders your phone unusable. This happens a lot more than you think. We get hundreds of e-mails every day from people that have used free unlock software that are looking for assistance trying to resurrect a dead phone. Unless you have a lot of expensive equipment, there is nothing you can do. Your phone provider, phone manufacturer or phone insurance will not cover you for the damages or repair your phone. You will be stuck with a repair bill, wasted time, and a locked phone.
Guaranteed Unlocking Alternative
Manufacturer-Authorized Codes: All UniquePhones unlock codes are sourced directly from the manufacturer of your handset and are guaranteed to unlock your phone without damaging it or erasing any information. Each unlock code that we get for your phone is unique to your handset and will work just for you. Our unlock codes don’t ‘hack’ your phone nor do they exploit some bug in the software. They are the correct unlock codes for you handset direct from the makers.
Proven Solutions: UniquePhones has successfully unlocked 3.1 million handsets so far, let’s make yours the next one.

While they were relatively unknown just a couple of years ago, unlocked cell phones have become a hot commodity in North America. But even as they grow in popularity, many cell phone users don’t have a clear idea of what unlocked phones are and exactly what they can do. Fortunately, CNET is here to help you make sense of it all.
So what is an unlocked phone? Frankly, the best way to answer that question is to first tell you about locked phones. A locked phone is a handset that can be used only on one carrier. Any phone you buy directly from a U.S. carrier will come “locked” to that provider. So for example, if you have a T-Mobile locked phone, you’ll be able to use that handset only with T-Mobile service and not AT&T.
Locked phones have long dominated the cell phone market in North America, and if carriers have their way, they’ll be around for a long time. As carriers see it, locked phones may not give you a lot of freedom, but in exchange you’re able to buy a phone with steep discounts and service rebates. That’s why you’re able to pay $49 for a brand-new camera phone that’s actually worth $299. You may be locked to one carrier, but you saved a lot of money in the process.
Conversely, unlocked phones lack any settings that tie them to a specific carrier. So if you have an unlocked phone, you can use it with either T-Mobile or AT&T. Not only do unlocked phones give you more freedom to choose a carrier, but you also don’t necessarily have to give up a much-loved handset if you decide to switch wireless providers.
What’s more, the variety of unlocked phones is much wider than the choice of locked handsets. You can get models with unique designs or high-end features such as powerful cameras or music players. You’re no longer restricted to buying only those models that your carrier decides to sell. Sound convenient? Well, yes, it is. But before you get too excited, it is important to remember that not all unlocked phones are created equal.
Because the United States uses two cell phone technologies, even an unlocked phone does come with some restrictions. Depending on whether your phone uses GSM or CDMA, you’ll find that you’ll have lots of choices or almost none at all.
GSM
The first cell phone technology, called GSM, is used by T-Mobile and AT&T. GSM unlocked phones give you the most freedom because they use a small, plastic chip called a SIM card, which typically is located behind the phone’s battery. SIM cards are issued by your carrier and contain your identity as a subscriber. When you insert your SIM card into a phone, that handset is activated and assumes your number.
While locked phones will accommodate SIM cards only from a certain carrier, unlocked phones will work with SIMs from any provider. So, if you’re a T-Mobile customer and you pop your SIM into an unlocked handset, you’ll be able to make calls as normal. But if you put that same SIM into a locked AT&T phone, you’ll be able to dial only emergency services.
An unlocked GSM phone is also advantageous to frequent globetrotters. In most countries throughout the world, you can buy a prepaid SIM card from a local carrier and use it in an unlocked handset. That phone will then have a local number for that country, which can save you a lot on international roaming charges. For more information on using a phone abroad, check out our Quick guide to world phones.
CDMA
The second major technology, which is incompatible with GSM, is called CDMA. Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, and a number of regional carriers such as Alltel and U.S. Cellular use CDMA. Though CDMA phones also can be unlocked, it’s not as easy to transfer them to another carrier because they don’t use SIM cards. Without the SIM card, you must get the new carrier to activate the phone for you and assign it to your number. Not only does that involve extra steps on your part, but also it’s unlikely that carrier will oblige you. Most of the time, CDMA carriers in the United States will not activate a phone that they didn’t sell you, even if it’s technically compatible with their network.
CDMA customers also don’t get same benefits when traveling abroad. CDMA is used in far fewer countries than GSM, so even if you have an unlocked CDMA phone, chances are greater you won’t be able to get service abroad, much less have it activated.
So to sum it all up, unlocked phones can be quite beneficial if you use GSM, but not so much if you use CDMA. If buying an unlocked phone is important to you, it’s best that you chose a GSM carrier. That’s why we’ll be focusing on GSM for the remainder of this feature.
If you think an unlocked cell phone sounds like a great idea you’ll be pleased to know that new unlocked handsets aren’t difficult to find. Just remember that since carriers sell only locked handsets, you won’t be able to pop into your local AT&T store for unlocked models. Instead, you’ll have to shop in independent cellular store, or you can look online. But keep in mind that because you’re not getting any carrier rebates, you will pay full price for most unlocked models. Higher-end phones such as the Nokia N95 can run you as much as $700.
The Nokia N95 is a great phone, but it won’t come cheap.
In stores
Though you won’t find an unlocked phone in a carrier store, they are widely available in retail locations run by a third party. It may be difficult to determine whether a store is affiliated with a carrier, so it’s easiest to just ask if they sell unlocked models. Also, an unlocked phone can make a nice souvenir from a trip to Europe and Asia. Since unlocked models are more common in those regions, it’s easy to find a wide selection.
Online
Unlocked phones are widely available form online retailers. Just pick out the model you like, then click the Purchase button. You also can buy unlocked phones on eBay or other auction sites. But be careful with what you buy online, particularly from anonymous sellers.
What about a SIM card?
If you have an unlocked phone and need service you sign up with a GSM carrier as normal. Just tell them you’ll be using your own phone and that you only need a SIM card. Carriers love new customers so you shouldn’t have a problem. But if a customer service rep tells you (incorrectly) that using an unlocked phone is not allowed, then try another carrier store. Or better yet, sign up on the service provider’s Web site.
Can I unlock a phone purchased from my carrier?
The good news is that you can unlock a GSM handset–all you need is an unlock code. The bad news is that it’s a bit more complicated than just flipping a switch. Also, it’s important to note that not all functions will work right away. See the next page for details. Here are the most common methods.
Get it from your carrier
Believe it or not, carriers will unlock phones for you. It all just depends on who and how you ask. As far as we can see, no carrier has a set policy; it all just depends on the circumstances. You may get a nice customer service rep who is willing to give you the code or you may talk to a more strict one who’s not so cooperative. One good piece of advice is that if you’re off your contract, they’ll be much more likely to do you the favor. And if you’re successful at getting the code, you may have to pay a fee.
Try online
Unlock codes are available form online sources, sometimes for a fee. CNET’s Download.com has a selection of options.
Other sources
Independent gadget shops can also unlock a phone, but we can’t make any recommendations. Again, we can only say caveat emptor.
Once you buy an unlocked phone, you’ll need to adjust the handset’s settings in order to fully utilize it. Here are the things you need to know:
Though you’ll be able to make calls right away–after inserting your SIM card, of course–messaging, data, and Web browsing functions may be inoperable. In order to use those features, you’ll have program the phone with your carrier’s data and multimedia settings. You can get these from your carrier or sometimes from the manufacturer, as well. Nokia and Sony Ericsson offer tools on their Web sites that will send the settings to your phone in the form of a text message. The settings will vary by carrier and model.
If you’re using the phone in North America, it’s essential that it support either the GSM 850 or 1900 band (though accessibility to both is best). Don’t bother purchasing a phone that uses only the 900 or 1800 bands, as those frequencies are used only outside the United States and Canada. You can find a phone’s bands by looking at its list of technical specifications.
If you’re hoping to use UMTS 3G services your phone must support the 1900 band for use in North America.
Unlocking a phone with your carrier’s permission may void any warranties. Or worse, you may have problems with the phone itself. Just this month, many Apple iPhone owners who unlocked their phones suddenly found them unusable when Apple issued a service update.
When using an unlocked phone, the standby screen and menu interface may appear differently than on one of the carrier’s locked phones. This is pretty much just an issue of aesthetics and not operability.
Some higher-end features in unlocked phones, such as push-to-talk and GPS services, may not be compatible with your carrier’s network. Check with your carrier to make sure.
Unlocked phones may not be able to support any games, wallpaper, or applications that you downloaded from your carrier’s wireless Internet service.
Your carrier won’t guarantee that it will support an unlocked phone if you’re experiencing connection problems. Also, it won’t repair or replace a broken unlocked phone. If you have any problems, you’ll have to seek help from the manufacturer, the seller, or another source.
