The BlackBerry Curve moved past Apple Inc’s iPhone in the first quarter to become the best-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S., research group NPD said yesterday.

Research In Motion (RIM), which already dominates the corporate smartphone market in the United States, also had three of the top five best-selling consumer smartphones in the period, with the Storm at No. 3 and the Pearl at No. 4, NPD said.

T-Mobile’s G1 ranked No. 5.

The iPhone was the top-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S. in both the third and fourth quarters of 2008. The Curve was second and the Palm Inc’s Centro was third.

NPD credited a “buy-one-get-one” promotion by Verizon Wireless — a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc — for helping push the Curve past the iPhone.

“The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD, in a news release.

The iPhone is only available through AT&T Inc. Apple launched its second-generation 3G iPhone last July.

RIM’s consumer smartphone market share climbed 15 percent from the previous period to nearly 50 percent in the first quarter, as Apple’s and Palm’s share both fell 10 percent.

More than half of RIM’s 25 million subscribers now fall into the non-corporate category, according to the company.

But the smartphone battle is just starting to heat up. Apple is widely expected to unveil a new iPhone in the next few months, while Palm’s highly-anticipated Pre smartphone is set to launch during the second quarter.

The smartphone market as a whole continues to grow, even as the larger handset market stagnates. The devices made up 23 percent of U.S. handset sales in the first quarter, NPD said, up from 17 percent in the year-ago quarter.

Shares of Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM rose 3 percent in late afternoon trading on the Nasdaq to $74.43. Shares of Cupertino, California-based Apple were up 3.4 percent to $131.63 on the Nasdaq.

Trillian Instant Messenger Application Coming Soon To BlackBerry

Trillian has been quite a popular instant messaging application on many platforms. Mac, PC and Linux all have desktop versions. The only mobile implementation so far has been on the iPhone. That is, until now. Trillian has announced they are going to be bringing a full blown multi platform instant messaging client to BlackBerry. It’s not released as of yet but, you can sign up to be notified when it does indeed become available. Looks pretty impressive from the screenshots they have displayed. Shout out to dumb4ever for letting us know about it in the CrackBerry forums.

Pearl 9100 QWERTY Keyboard This came out of left field. Al over at CIO.com spotted a replacement keyboard from TrueSupplier for RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Pearl 9100 which shows a full keyboard labeled “OEM Blackberry Pearl 9100 Keyboard Keypad Black.” Now this has started a whole flurry on the web since regular Pearl devices all come with a condensed two letters on each key SureType keyboard.

Kevin over @CrackBerry has managed to get some confirmation that the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 will actually come in two models. One with a full QWERTY keyboard and one with SureType. Personally I already find it hard enough to hit the keys reliably on the Bold 9700 compared to the spacious Bold 9000. I wonder what typing on a even narrower device will be like. On the other hand this would solve one of the biggest annoyances with the Pearl line which is the condensed SureType keyboard with no shortcuts.

What do you think? Would you get a Pearl 9100 with a full keyboard?

We first heard about the clamshell 9670 a bit back and it still leaves me scratching my head. We now have more pictures of the BlackBerry 9670 to…

BlackBerry 9670 & BlackBerry Atlas

Now that the Bold 9650 and 3G Pearl are both out in the open, we can again turn to some other BlackBerry devices that are still floating in the rumor mill. We’ve seen various shots of both the 9670 and atlas in the past, and forums member B.I.G.G.I.E has posted a few more for your viewing pleasure. Nothing terribly exciting this time around, but a few more angles and some OS details for both devices. The clam-style 9670 featuring BlackBerry 6 (OS 6.0) and a 5 megapixel camera recently came out of nowhere at us (we’ve been hearing Verizon asked RIM to build this one as an exclusive for them), while the atlas (as it’s labeled here) was the codename for what was the BlackBerry 8910 and is now the 8980 (click link for another related forum post). Hopefully more to come in the near future. Hit the jump for more images.

When the Apple iPad released, many wondered who would be next. We knew of HP and a handful of others, but after initial reviews they didn’t pair up to the iPad. Then there were rumors of Research In Motion ordering 8.9″ display screens from Hon Hai. Many started wondering if RIM could possibly be working on a tablet.

We’ve received word from a connect that RIM is in fact working on a tablet. We do not have many details at the time, but we have been told that it will be smaller and thinner than the iPad. The BlackBerry tablet also goes by the codename: ‘BlackPad’ or possibly could be what Bla1ze from CrackBerry tells us, ‘Cobalt’. The tablet will have full BlackBerry OS compatibility and functionality (note, we didn’t say what kind of OS, lol). It is not set to release this year, and going by how long RIM takes to announce anything, it wouldn’t surprise us if we don’t see the ‘BlackPad’ until WES 2011 (unless it gets leaked first).

Of course you have to take our word on all of this. Remember though, we were the first to tell you about Evolved EDGE, the Pearl coming with a T9 keyboard, the power point presenter ‘black-box’, that we’d soon see a clamshell full-qwerty flip phone, and the list could continue on. The point is, we’ve presented details on things months before any other details arrive. We are confident that we’ll see more info on a BlackBerry tablet in the near future, but until then the rumors and speculations will continue.

Are you interested in a BlackBerry tablet? Will you be buying one? We think if done correctly, a BlackBerry tablet could make for a very new and unique experience, one entirely new just like the slider-phone.
