CrackBerry.com's BlackBerry Torch 9800 Review!

RIM’s all new BlackBerry Torch 9800 for AT&T capitalizes on BlackBerry’s historical strength by including awesome keyboard and killer email while featuring a plethora of new features including a proper touchscreen, upgraded camera and the highly anticipated BlackBerry 6 operating system. It will be available August 12th for $199.99 after contract.

You thought sliders were played out? Well think again. Research In Motion may not have invented the slider, but by working hand in hand with AT&T on its development since the project took root in late 2008, they have come very close to perfecting it. With some major upgrades and many subtle refinements throughout the user interface and under the hood, BB6 plays catch up in the smartphone wars. With the Torch, it now delivers to BlackBerry users a modern feeling experience that takes messaging and social media to a new level while placing much more emphasis on traditional media (photos, music, video, podcasts, etc.). The best news of all is the new WebKit rendering engine, which is the same web browser technology behind the iPhone, Android, webOS, and Nokia phones. You can finally enjoy browsing webpages on a BlackBerry.

There’s a lot to cover in this review, so let’s get to it!

Torch

Today at an exclusive AT&T/RIM event held in New York City we had the chance to play with the newest device in RIMs arsenal — the BlackBerry Torch 9800. A mix of touchscreen and familiar QWERTY keyboard, this is the first slider BlackBerry and looks like it could possibly be the best BlackBerry to date. It will also be the first device to have BlackBerry 6, RIMs latest “revamped” OS. The Torch will be officially available for purchase on August 12th for $199 exclusively through AT&T (for now). While you’ll have to wait a few weeks to get your hands on one, we had the chance to play around with it and see whats new both with the device itself and the all-new BlackBerry 6 operating system. Read on for our first impressions.

Jul. 30, 2010 (9:37 am) By: Brian Osborne

A website dedicated to BlackBerry users, driphter.com, has posted a hands-on review of the BlackBerry Bold 9780. While a video review of a new BlackBerry model is always interesting, the one offered by driphter.com has received considerable interest since it also shows the BlackBerry running the new BlackBerry 6 operating system. Hardware wise it seems that the 9780 isn’t really much different from its predecessor, the 9700.

If you’re a BlackBerry owner chomping at the bit for more peeks at the new BlackBerry operating system you will want to check out this video. Probably the most striking thing I took away from it was how smooth and fast the OS was as the user flips between screens. User interfaces also seem more intuitive which will make it easy for users of previous BlackBerry models to adapt to the new OS.

Personal Assistant 3

I was wrong. There, I said it. When we took a look at Phone Assistant back in April, I mentioned that this application acts as, well, your personal assistant (coincidence? I think not). Personal Assistant keeps you in the loop for a variety of important issues throughout the day. From this application, you can keep an eye on your travel itinerary, bill management (with mobile minute tracker), banking, portfolio and credit card management. Your information is laid out in front of you in amazing detail. This makes it easy to get updated at a glance, which allows you to focus on making the most of your day to day.

So what was I wrong about? Well I was wrong in saying that it didn’t suck up to you (the boss). Why do I say that? Just check out what’s available in the latest update made back in May to Personal Assistant 3.0; from their product description:

  • Integration with your calendar, all upcoming events, including bill due dates and upcoming itineraries will automatically be added to the calendar.
  • The application is running in the background and as a result is now super fast, over 1000% performance improvement from previous versions.
  • The Enhanced Notification feature was already introduced in version 2.5 and now has enhanced capabilities with more alerts, such as APR change to your credit card and more. Also, all alerts are shown aggregated in a new alert tab.
  • More readable account information screens and ability to refresh all accounts at once (refresh all available only for the premium version).

Still no word of when it will be able to get you your coffee or not, though you could call and order it yourself. Personal Assistant comes in a free and premium version, both of which are available in BlackBerry App World. I’m not sure why Pageonce sent an email to subscribers almost 3 months after it was updated, claiming it was “new” and “now available”. It even caught me off guard. Thanks to those who pointed it out to me.

Blackberry app for twitter - Tweet My Location

Tweet My Location

Do people call you several times a day asking “Where are you?” Ask them to follow you on twitter and keep tweeting your location using “Tweet My Location”!

Are you in a city that you don’t know much? You can tell your friends automatically, what place you are visiting right now. Traveling is fun with “Tweet My Location”. Amaze your friends with the frequency with which you can tweet about your current location.

Or are you simply addicted to twitter? Now you can post your current location to twitter automatically using your GPS or network location. Simply setup the app and let it do the rest! Your location will be calculated using your GPS and network coordinates and a human readable address will be posted onto twitter.

Here is a typical walk through of the app
• Run the application
• Give your Twitter User-name and Password
• Give an automatic time interval, for example 5 minutes
• Enable the service

Make sure you allow all permissions to this app right after installation. You can give permissions by going to Options—Applications—Tweet My Location – Edit Permissions and allow all the permissions in case your app isn’t working.

Now your phone will tweet your location after every five minutes.

Afraid of auto tweet? Don’t worry! You can disable the auto tweet feature and can manually tweet your location description whenever you feel like it. The application runs in the background and does not bother you while you use your phone.

Review: Rogers BlackBerry Pearl 3G

The BlackBerry Pearl 3G. This device has been a long time coming. Since we first heard about the device way back, it has been on the list of original Pearl form factor fans every. While some have moved on to other devices, simply due to lack of patience in waiting for the next generation Pearl others have stayed true to the Pearl form factor. For me, the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 series smartphone was the device that brought me into the BlackBerry world.

We first heard about the clamshell 9670 a bit back and it still leaves me scratching my head. We now have more pictures of the BlackBerry 9670 to…

BlackBerry 9670 & BlackBerry Atlas

Now that the Bold 9650 and 3G Pearl are both out in the open, we can again turn to some other BlackBerry devices that are still floating in the rumor mill. We’ve seen various shots of both the 9670 and atlas in the past, and forums member B.I.G.G.I.E has posted a few more for your viewing pleasure. Nothing terribly exciting this time around, but a few more angles and some OS details for both devices. The clam-style 9670 featuring BlackBerry 6 (OS 6.0) and a 5 megapixel camera recently came out of nowhere at us (we’ve been hearing Verizon asked RIM to build this one as an exclusive for them), while the atlas (as it’s labeled here) was the codename for what was the BlackBerry 8910 and is now the 8980 (click link for another related forum post). Hopefully more to come in the near future. Hit the jump for more images.

Pearl 3G Large

Following this mornings official announcement of the BlackBerry Pearl 3G, Canadian carriers Telus and Rogers have proclaimed, via press releases, that they will be carrying the Pearl 3G in the coming months. The Telus announcement reads:

Starting in May, this smartphone will be available from TELUS in pink and in black for as little as $29.99 on a three-year plan. For more information about the new BlackBerry Pearl 3G smartphone, please visit www.blackberry.com/pearl3

The Rogers announcement was a bit more non-committal as far as dates go:

Pricing and availability will be announced in the coming weeks. For additional information about Rogers’ lineup of BlackBerry smartphones, please visit www.rogers.com. For more information about the BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9100, please visit www.blackberry.com/pearl3G

Any folks north of the border planning to pick up one of these hot little — and we do mean little — numbers?

UPDATE: The PR team from Bell Canada just sent us a little note and would like to be included in the Canadian BlackBerry fun: “Bell Mobility will carry the device is May and it will operate on our HSPA network.”

Straight from the horse’s mouth, comes the news that the latest incarnation of every suit-totin’, email-checkin’, business-type’s favourite phone OS (that is, BlackBerry OS 6.0) will be released this Summer.

During an analyst talk today, RIM co-chief Mike Lazaridis showed off the first official teasers of the new OS.

New features will include the previously mentioned WebKit browser — which will now play a central role in the OS, and the OS will support both trackpad and touchscreen devices, but the juiciest bombshell was the news that older BlackBerries will be able to upgrade, though it wasn’t stated how many models will be given the option.

Oh my. This is a commercial I’m sure a few can appreciate. The folks behind the commercial, Lane Bryant created the commercial only to have it cancelled/chopped down by the TV execs at Fox and ABC. Now that it has been pulled, it’s getting more exposure than if it had run in its entirety.

While the circumstances of it being pulled are undergoing scrutiny, we here at CrackBerry see nothing wrong with it. A beautiful woman, who happens to be a BlackBerry 8520 user. What’s wrong with that? Nothing. Unless of course, the sight of a few curves scares you. Around here though, Curves are always a welcome sight. ;)

BlackBerry 9670 Shows Face, Rocking CDMA And New Clamshell Design

Well this has certainly been an interesting day. First we seen some shots of OS 6.0 and now we get an up close look at the BlackBerry 9670. This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a new clamshell design from Research In Motion but it is the first sighting of the long on the table device. As we know it, the specs for this one are rather interesting with what may be a few surprises to some out there.

Specs:

  • 5 Mega Pixel Camera
  • CDMA Radio Bands
  • 360×480 Screen Resolution
  • WiFi
  • MicroUSB Slot
  • MicroSD Internal Storage Slot
  • Massive External Display
  • OS 6.0 Ready

Other than those few items, details are still kind of slim. While we have a model number already, we’re led to believe this is what is also referred to as the BlackBerry “oxford.” Clearly, the BlackBerry 9670 is not a completed device and to judge by these pics might be selling it a little short. So what do you all think?

Pearl 9100 (crackberry)

According to a source very close to the issue, Verizon has given the go for RIM to release the BlackBerry Storm 2 in September of this year. The followup to the groundbreaking Storm that was released last year as the first touchscreen Blackberry, we have been told that the new Storm 2 addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the first smartphone and of Verizon devices in general, in that it will support WiFi.

storm 2

While we’re not able to name our source, we can say that we’ve no doubts regarding the veracity of their information. The source gave us their assurances that the Storm 2 would have WiFi, and would be an even better Pro-consumer device than the first Storm. We wonder if RIM and Verizon will make any changes to the touchscreen, a common point of complaint for the first-gen devices; comments he dropped lead us to believe WiFi isn’t the only thing RIM and Verizon have up their sleeve with the Storm 2.

The original Blackberry Storm debuted as Verizon’s challenger to the iPhone, remains one of their flagship devices. With the release of Blackberry App World, the Storm is in an even better position to make a dent in Apple’s market share. The launch of the Storm 2 with WiFi and an improved touchscreen could draw both consumers and business users alike in to Verizon.

RIM’s BlackBerry App World today is available to upgrade to version 1.1, which includes a couple new features worth mentioning.
