This came out of left field. Al over at CIO.com spotted a replacement keyboard from TrueSupplier for RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Pearl 9100 which shows a full keyboard labeled “OEM Blackberry Pearl 9100 Keyboard Keypad Black.” Now this has started a whole flurry on the web since regular Pearl devices all come with a condensed two letters on each key SureType keyboard.
Kevin over @CrackBerry has managed to get some confirmation that the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 will actually come in two models. One with a full QWERTY keyboard and one with SureType. Personally I already find it hard enough to hit the keys reliably on the Bold 9700 compared to the spacious Bold 9000. I wonder what typing on a even narrower device will be like. On the other hand this would solve one of the biggest annoyances with the Pearl line which is the condensed SureType keyboard with no shortcuts.
What do you think? Would you get a Pearl 9100 with a full keyboard?
Oh my. This is a commercial I’m sure a few can appreciate. The folks behind the commercial, Lane Bryant created the commercial only to have it cancelled/chopped down by the TV execs at Fox and ABC. Now that it has been pulled, it’s getting more exposure than if it had run in its entirety.
While the circumstances of it being pulled are undergoing scrutiny, we here at CrackBerry see nothing wrong with it. A beautiful woman, who happens to be a BlackBerry 8520 user. What’s wrong with that? Nothing. Unless of course, the sight of a few curves scares you. Around here though, Curves are always a welcome sight.

Well this has certainly been an interesting day. First we seen some shots of OS 6.0 and now we get an up close look at the BlackBerry 9670. This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a new clamshell design from Research In Motion but it is the first sighting of the long on the table device. As we know it, the specs for this one are rather interesting with what may be a few surprises to some out there.
Specs:
- 5 Mega Pixel Camera
- CDMA Radio Bands
- 360×480 Screen Resolution
- WiFi
- MicroUSB Slot
- MicroSD Internal Storage Slot
- Massive External Display
- OS 6.0 Ready
Other than those few items, details are still kind of slim. While we have a model number already, we’re led to believe this is what is also referred to as the BlackBerry “oxford.” Clearly, the BlackBerry 9670 is not a completed device and to judge by these pics might be selling it a little short. So what do you all think?

Amazon
is our Deal of the Day for the BlackBerry Storm
with it costing only $99 without rebates with a contract. They have an added bonus when you click on the link provided here, there is an added $30 off ($30 cash back) when you get the Amazon Rewards Visa Card.
This is the best price we’ve seen on the BlackBerry Storm since it was first sold in November. There are no restrictions on the deal expect as with all Verizon BlackBerry smartphones you are required to purchase either an email plan or unlimited data plan.
When you get the Visa card along with the BlackBerry Storm at Amazon that beats the Verizon deal of the Buy-One-Get-One promotion which started on Friday. That requires two contracts to the get the second BlackBerry Storm for free.
BlackBerry Storm pricing is now way below the iPhone 3G price of $199 and $299. It has more features than the iPhone and more apps are available.

The Ultimate Guide To Help Setup Your BlackBerry Device
This guide will help you set up your BlackBerry for use with a variety of services. It begins with an introductory look at your BlackBerry’s controls, then leads you through initial out-of-the-box setup. It also shows you how to check and send email, synchronize your BlackBerry with your desktop address book, and browse the Web. Finally, it instructs you on basic troubleshooting and security features.
Because instructions can vary from device to device and among wireless carriers (Cingular, Nextel, Verizon, etc.), it’s important that you rely on the product- and network-specific instructions that come with your device and are given to you by the carrier you chose.

If you were feverishly anticipating a cellphone this year, it was one of two phones: this is the other one. That’s because the BlackBerry Bold is RIM’s most powerful, polished handset ever. With 3G, a glossy new UI, a real web browser, serious hardware and an almost beautiful body, the Bold doesn’t redefine the BlackBerry experience, but it does elevate to the highest point its ever been.
What, you think we didn’t have one before today? While we’re still not sure when you’ll be able to walk into a Rogers store to actually buy the shiny new device like Simon did, today still marks the official launch of the BlackBerry Bold on Rogers. In honor of this special day, we’ve decided to post our exhaustive review, if only to whet your appetites.
And boy, has this day been a long time coming: three years in development, three months since its official announcement at WES 2008, and three times the hype of any other BlackBerry release. The first in RIM’s next generation lineup of smartphones, the BlackBerry Bold has been labeled everything from an enterprise company’s desperate push into the prosumer space to a true iPhone killer. Most of the BlackBerry faithful are just hoping that it turns out to be a worthy merger and evolution of the BlackBerry 8800 and Curve device lines. This review will settle the debate.
Be forewarned, our review of the BlackBerry Bold is fairly large. However, we’ve broken the review down into specific sections for quick and convenient access to the information you seek. Make sure to post a comment to let us know if there’s anything we’ve missed, anything else you want to know about, and whether or not you feel RIM’s new flagship device meets the hype.

Let’s be clear: If you hate BlackBerry phones, you will still intensely dislike the Bold. As many coats of polish as RIM has thickly layered on the Bold, it is still a BlackBerry, with all of its suit-and-tie DNA fully intact. Fundamentally, it works and plays just like every other BlackBerry, but with a load of small-to-medium improvements, updates and tweaks that add up to a richer, more refined phone that also looks far better than the rest while doing its thing.
Screen
Yes, the Bold’s 480×320 screen is dazzling enough to warrant its own section dedicated simply to praising it. Incredibly rich and contrast-y with stunning pixel density, it’s so nice you want to touch it. I actually tried to once or twice to hit okay on a dialog box, forgetting that it wasn’t the touchy kind of screen. It almost makes reading the plain text of an email depressing, knowing you could be looking at a gorgeous video instead.
Keyboard
A BlackBerry lives and dies by its keyboard. When RIM diehards countered reckless banter about the death of the BlackBerry per the iPhone’s Exchange support by pointing to the keyboard. After you get used to the slight angle shift in the Bold’s keys, they’re fantastic, like a delicately balanced wine, with a perfect blend of springy, punchy and spongy. The glossy navigation keys are overly large for reasons I cannot quite divine. The backlighting is beautiful.
Body
It’s hands-down the best looking phone RIM has put out, not to mention one of the most attractive pieces of kit on the whole market, even if the clean chrome on black is borrowed from another phone (and we’re not saying it is). It looks like an incredibly modern business device, what you imagine people with more important jobs than you would carry to conduct business that’s more important than yours, while talking to their accountant about how much fatter their bank account is than yours. It exudes power. Welcome to 2008, RIM design department.
It’s larger and wider than the Curve, but it still feels fine in my hands, which aren’t giant-sized by any means. The faux-leather backing, however, is absolutely puzzling, like RIM tried to add a touch of class in the same way Donald Trump’s hairdo gives him a touch of handsome. In other words, it’s fake as crap and feels tacky. Insignificant, really, but it’s actually the thing I hate most about this phone. Nonetheless, it feels rock solid.
Connections
It has everything you want: 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi. Despite earlier reports that it suffered from bad 3G problems, I found that it was more consistent and reliable with its 3G connection. It wasn’t uncommon to grab four bars of signal where, say, the iPhone only saw one. (I realize bars are not standardized or totally accurate, but the disparity between the two was often significant, two or more bars.) In drive-testing, handoff went smoothly. GPS was slower than I would’ve liked, more often than not taking up to a minute to get a lock, and the maps app could be snappier (and prettier) than it is, but it’ll do. At least on AT&T it will immediately have a decent navigator app.
Battery
It’s a champ. Despite lots of 3G browsing, email and other everyday app use, a half charge right out of the box got me through an eight-hour day with no problem. Expect more detailed battery test update later, but all indications are that this thing will last you throughout the day with no problems at all. Way to go, RIM.
Browser
Okay, so there was some controversy about how quickly its browser renders compared to the iPhone. In my tests over Wi-Fi—and believe me, I triple checked to make sure it was on Wi-Fi—it was either tied with, or just behind the iPhone, like the dude who lost to Michael Phelps by a finger tip. The speed difference really is trivial.
It’s the best BlackBerry browser ever (this phone is a lot of “best BlackBerry ______ ever”), and one of the most usable mobile browsers around. In other words, it’s actually usable. Not a miracle. The trackball isn’t the most elegant way to navigate pages—largely because of the zoom metaphor—but it gets the job done, and the vast majority of the time, the Bold shows you pages the way they’re supposed to be. It definitely sets a standard for what mobile browsers should do at a minimum, and it’s fine for light surfing.
Email
What’s a BlackBerry without email? Perhaps wisely, RIM chose to mostly not fix what ain’t broken, adding small but significant tweaks like the ability to see pictures in message, full HTML and attachment viewing. Otherwise, it’s basically the same experience you’re used to. The higher res screen makes the text pop more and adds clarity, but it’s not any prettier, which somewhat stands out against the rest of the overhauled UI.
Media
The Roxio-powered desktop Media Manager still sucks total balls—can you please get a decent integrated manager, RIM? And the music/video setup is essentially unchanged—same menu system and organization—but it has a cleaner, less tacky skin on top that makes it look like it’s greatly improved, even though it isn’t.
But! Watching videos on this thing is a-maz-ing. The sample Speed Racer trailer was so gorgeous and yummy, I almost wanted to watch that 80-car-pile-up of a movie. Almost. The external speaker is surprisingly good, too, with richer sound than most other handsets. Still, this is one of the areas of the phone that needs work—the video quality nearly woos me into giving it a pass—but I can’t emphasize enough how much it needs a decent media manager.
OS & UI
RIM has re-skinned the entire operating interface, shifting from pixel-y, realish bitmaps to slick, almost Tron-like high-res icons that have a neon pseudo-science fiction modernist feel to them. One issue: It’s no longer immediately apparent what each icon does, so expect to hover initially. (With Precision Zen, the theme with splashes of color, it’s easier to discern what icons represent.) I like them, but it’s really an issue of personal taste—still, future skins will benefit from being able to go high-res.
All of the top-level menus have been cleaned up as well, with crisp white text on a black background. It feels nice, and goes with the look of the handset itself, conveying the sense of it being modern and powerful. Unfortunately, when you go into applications themselves—mail, contacts, etc.—or deep into settings, you feel like you’ve entered a time warp three years into the past. It’s like eating a tuna sandwich after a piece of sashimi—the tuna sandwich alone, uncontextualized, is fine, but next to a pure, clean slice of maguro it looks like crap.
Startup on this device has been exceptionally slow—I initially thought my unit was busted or something (maybe it is), though I suppose BBs are always damn sluggish on cold starts. For the for first minute or so after booting, the OS kind of chugs as well, but after clearing the pipes, I guess, it runs totally smoothly, as it should with its speedy 624MHz processor.
Still, overall, it’s the same BlackBerry OS as before, just prettier and running on snappy hardware. If you’re used to a BlackBerry, you won’t have any problems getting around. If you’re not, well, it’s one of the easier mobile OSes to learn and deal with, everything is more or less up front, and on top, at least, it’s pretty.
Conclusion
This is RIM’s best phone ever. Does that mean it’s the phone for you? If you’re a BlackBerry fanatic, yes—it really is the phone you’ve been waiting for, if you’re not hoping RIM radically changed the recipe. Because they didn’t. It’s cleaner and brighter, but it’s not an overhaul by any means. It’s a more powerful and beautiful distillation of the same experience.
For other people who were eyeing it as the time to switch to BlackBerry, the issue is less straightforward. As I said in the intro, it’s coming into a complicated world, where it has more consumer crossover appeal than a flagship RIM device—currently, the 8800—ever has before. (No doubt, even more people are looking at it in light of 3G problems on other handsets, either suit-and-ties who were considering the jump, or people looking for their first high-end smartphone, though more of the former.) At its heart, this thing is a corporate workhouse. It will play movies, music, browse the internet and all of the things consumers usually want—and do it well—but it is coming from a different mindset than the iPhone, something to keep in mind if you’re torn between these two phones.
AT&T has not set a price (or a date for that matter) but we’re hearing that it will not touch the $199 mark when it launches in September. Depending on how aggressively RIM and AT&T want to push it, it looks like it could go as low as $249, but $299 seems more likely, another factor that makes it more suited to corporate than consumer. (Update: We’re hearing that it’s definitely $299, and it will hit September 12.) Still, whichever side you’re on, this is a fantastic phone that perhaps pushes the BlackBerry experience to its peak. The flipside of that is that with its next generation of phones, RIM might have to radically reinvent it to stay ahead of the game.

How to Reset your BlackBerry Without Removing the Battery
Posted: 27 Jan 2009 01:06 AM PST
Occasionally, you will need to reboot your BlackBerry, (e.g. if the BlackBerry seems to get stuck hour-glassing, or doesn’t respond).
Did you know that you don’t have to pull the battery?

You can do a quick reset, but press Alt + Caps + Del. This will perform a quick reset, and should be sufficient for most problems.Purpose:
People often don’t know when / how to reset their BlackBerry when they have a problem, this guide will cover the methods, reasons, and order in which resets should be done.
Reason:
There are many reasons to reset a BlackBerry, in general when things are just not working the way they should a reset is likely to correct the problem.
Some possible reasons to perform a reset:
Network Issues
- Handheld displays an X beside the coverage indicator
- Handheld displays GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) or lower case gprs (General Packet Radio Service) as the network status indicator
- User is unable to send or receive messages on the handheld
Software Issues
- User receives an error code on the handheld
- Applications do not appear to be functioning correctly
- Desktop Manager is stuck at “working” status when the handheld is connected
- Bluetooth is not detected
Hardware Issues
- Handheld display is hard to read. For example, the display shows lines obscuring text
- Keypad is not functioning correctly. For example, keys do not work, the trackwheel is not functioning correctly, or the handheld does not turn on
Works on Models:
All models except the 850/857 & 81XX Series
There are four different types of resets, and they should be tried in order:
- Power cycle - simply turn the device off, then on
- Soft-Reset - Hold down ALT + CAP + DEL
- Double-Soft-Reset Hold down ALT + CAP + DEL once the screen illuminates repeat to press ALT + CAP + DEL again.
- Hard-Reset - Locate and push the reset button using a paper-clip. Or remove the battery for 30 seconds, then replace.
Performing a double-soft reset stops all applications on the BlackBerry device and is nearly the equivalent of a hard reset. Timing however is critical. Perform a soft reset by pressing the ALT + CAP + DEL keys. The screen will go blank. When the screen is no longer black, press the ALT + CAP + DEL keys again. You should then see another blank screen followed by an hour glass.
Note: This does not apply to the BlackBerry Pearl smartphone.
Note: The BB-7100 and BB-7290 and BB-7520 do not have reset buttons, on these you need to remove the battery (gently) wait a few seconds and then re-insert the battery. Be careful as you do not want to damage the contacts (or get them dirty for that matter).
Reset-Button Locations:
67xx / 95x / 77xx - On the back, at the bottom of the unit (small hole)
62xx / 72xx - Underneath the battery cover (small hole, marked as RESET)
6510 / 7510 - By the battery (small hole)
No reset button:
71xx / 7290 / 7520
BlackBerry 7290 can Perform the Reset after an upgrade to 4.1 OS or later
- Hold down ALT + CAP + DEL

How to Setup One Touch Keyboard Lock on Your BlackBerry

How to Setup One Touch Keyboard Lock on Your BlackBerry
Tested on a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 - 8110 - 8130 - 8300 - 8310 - 8320 - 8800 - 8820

Since all but one Blackberry are not flip phones, it is necessary to lock the keypad before one slips it into his pocket or her purse. When we first got the Curve, we had to navigate to the Keyboard Lock icon and click the trackball to lock.Too cumbersome. Luckily, there is a faster way. It is possible to set the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button so that when you click on it, it will lock the phone.
If you have official BlackBerry Accessories then you wont have to worry about Locking the Keyboard, as the official accessories have built in sensors
Here are the steps to set it up:
- From home screen, navigate to the Options icon and click on it
- Click the icon that reads “Screen / Keyboard“
- Scroll down the entry that reads “Left Side Convenience Key Opens:“
- Change it from “Push to Talk” to “Keyboard Lock“

How to Set Up Speed Dial Numbers on Your BlackBerry
Posted: 16 Apr 2008 03:15 PM PDT
BlackBerry Tips and Tricks - Howto Set Up Speed Dial Numbers
Tested on BlackBerry 8100 - 8110 - 8130 - 8300 - 8310 - 8320 - 8800 - 8820 Devices but should also work on other Models -
You can assign a phone number to each of the 26 letter keys. To do that, all you need to do is press and hold a letter key in the Home screen or the Phone screen. If the key has not been assigned yet, it will ask if you want to assign a Speed Dial to the key and you can then choose a number from your phone book. Once a key is assigned, you can dial it by pressing and holding the key.
TIP
- You can access the Voice Mail by pressing & holding the “1” key
NOTE - When you enter a phone number in the phone book, you can press the Menu (BB) button and select “Add Wait” or “Add Pause”. Both options are useful if you need to send extra digits after the phone number (e.g. to send extension, password for voice mail or access code for conference call). With the “Add Wait” option, it will prompt you to hit Return before sending the extra digits. “Add Pause” will send them automatically after approx 2 seconds delay.

How to Copy Your BlackBerry Contacts To The SIM Phone Book

How to Copy Your BlackBerry Contacts To The SIM Phone Book
Tested On BlackBerry 8100 - 8110 - 8120 - 8300 - 8310 - 8320 - 8700- 8800 - 8820 Devices
A SIM card stands for Subscriber Identity Module, on most mobile phones the SIM card is the place where it holds the address book and SMS messages. The SIM card is less important on the Blackberry because the address book is stored on the built-in flash memory or it can wireless sync your Outlook address book. But their may be a time where you want to retrieve the address book off a SIM, especially when you are a new Blackberry user coming from a regular mobile phone and want to import your contacts. We have already told you how to import your whole address book, but here’s how to selectively add a contact to your SIM card:
This ones tricky and depending on how many contacts you have might take a while to accomplish, but if you must have your contacts on your SIM then follow my guide -
- Start off by going into the Address Book
- Highlight a contact, now hit enter to get into the individual contacts screen
- Now hit the Menu key and choose “Copy to SIM Phone Book“
- Hit the Menu key and Save it
Easy right? Here is where it gets tricky. In order for this to work you will need to have the Contacts number be stored under the “Work” category. Also, if the contact has multiple numbers, for some reason the BlackBerry wont allow to you to save it to the SIM.
Note: If you receive the message “Not enough room in SIM,” delete the SMS messages on the Phone screen and delete the entries in the SIM Phone Book.

Phone Alternatives - BlackBerry Storm 9530 Smartphone
Great news for all BlackBerry fans! To put it simply, The BlackBerry Storm 9530 Smartphone is Blackberry’s answer to Apple’s iPhone. It is designed to meet the needs of both casual and business customers, incorporating many basic and advanced applications. It has a cool 3.25-inch ‘clickable’ touchscreen that responds to touch very much like a real keypad. The touchscreen actually physically depresses slightly on touch, giving a distinct feeling that you have pushed a button. This highly improves the typing experience on the BlackBerry Storm 9530 Smartphone. This feature alone is a good enough reason to buy this Blackberry instead of the iPhone!
The BlackBerry Storm 9530 Smartphone has a lot of similarities with other Blackberry models in terms of interface and functions. Blackberry phone user can quickly familiarize with the interface of the new model, as many of the applications uses the format similar with older Blackberry models. The iPhone interfaces and functions, as many know, are very different from other phone models, and even a little ‘eccentric’. BlackBerry’s are sold by many wireless providers across the globe, including AT&T/Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
When these companies sell a BlackBerry, they do so at a discount in order to attract customers. The providers then make up the lost profits over the lifetime of the contract signed by the customer.
To protect those profits, the wireless providers configure a “subsidy lock” into each BlackBerry. The subsidy lock prevents the BlackBerry from being used on another provider’s network.
BlackBerry Unlocking
There are four known methods for removing the subsidy code and unlocking the BlackBerry.
Call Your Wireless Carrier
Many wireless carriers will tell you your unlock code if you meet their requirements. These requirements normally include being a customer for a minimum amount of time and having your account paid up.
Most wireless providers do not charge for this service. Rogers is a significant exception, as they attempt to extort $250 from their customers for this service.
Calculating the Unlock Code from the IMEI
Most providers use unlock codes which are generated from the BlackBerry’s IMEI number.
Many small companies exist which have taken the time and effort to crack the algorithms used to generate those unlock codes.
These companies usually run web sites where you can enter your IMEI number and receive an unlock code — or a fee.
This method does not work with BlackBerry’s from all wireless providers. Some wireless carriers assign the unlock codes randomly to each phone and store the results in a database. There is no way to algorithmically determine the unlock code for a BlackBerry from one of those providers.
Specialized software exists and can be purchased which will erase the subsidy locking code from GSM BlackBerry phones.
You install this software on your PC and plug your BlackBerry into its docking cradle or into a USB sync cable.
BlackBerry Unlocking Hardware
If all else fails, there is specialized hardware which will force your BlackBerry to forget it’s unlock code.
This hardware usually takes the form of a clip or a box. You plug your device into your BlackBerry and it erases the subsidy lock.
You can purchase these devices yourself, but usually it is less expensive to either take your phone into a local shop or send it off to a specialist company.

The media player of Blackberry 8300 takes care of the essence of music that comes to the fullest in it. There have been other significant improvements in this device that include spell-checker for e-mails and memos, plus a new feature that enables the adjustment of call volume as well.
Despite of all the great features that have been promised in this handset, the disappointment has come in the form of absence of Wi-Fi feature, or UTMS(3G) feature that has been widely anticipated in this mobile phone. Blackberry Mobile Phones - Powerful and Convenient
Business mobile phones are synonymous with Blackberry mobile phones that have made a difference in the way the world operates through mobile phones. Blackberry is famous for inventing business phones and facilitating the needs of the business users all around the world. Blackberry has come up with a lot of business phones in the recent times, depending upon the needs of the customers. Blackberry was devised by Canadian based RIM company in 1999, the company specializes in PDA styled handsets capable of web browsing, e-mailing, and accessing business documents through it. Generally, it comes with a QWERTY keyboard that ensures easy typing through this device.
There are other variants of Blackberry phones as well, and it would be good to discuss a few of them. There has been much hullabaloo about the Blackberry Pearl that was introduced as a semi business phone by the manufacturers. It wasn’t exceptionally brilliant in its usability, however it was a semi business device that was made keeping in view the general user and it is doing very well in the market.
Talking about the other Blackberry devices, there is Blackberry 8700 that is a major hit across the European and the American subcontinent. This handset includes all the business features as QWERTY Keyboard, inbuilt GPS navigations and many more business features to its credit.
Next in the line, is Blackberry 8800, which is another useful device from the manufacturers. It is a better looking device than the predecessor 8700 and it offers some very impressive features as well. This mobile phone has been equipped with a full fledged QWERTY keyboard along with a QUAD-Band GSM connection, blackberry connectivity and GPS navigation system that makes it equivalent to any PC or laptop. So the business users are finding it very appealing.
One feature that Blackberry devices discourage is the inculcation of the camera in their handsets. We have seen a camera in Blackberry Pearl, which again is justifiable as it isn’t a mainstream business phone. Thus, Blackberry mobile phones have always found a niche market for their devices. And the brand Blackberry speaks for itself.

Enjoying SMS Messaging With a Blackberry
With the introduction of Blackberry, SMS messaging has found a new home. SMS messaging, also known as text messaging, is just one of many things that can be completed with a Blackberry.
The Blackberry, which was first introduced to the world in 1999, is a special wireless handheld device that supports a number of technology features. In addition to text messaging, a Blackberry is also capable of acting as a mobile telephone, of performing Internet faxing, of completing push email, and even of web browsing. Some even offer two-way radio capabilities.
The Blackberry first gained attention because of its email capabilities, despite the fact that it originally only offered a monochrome display. Today, the most popular models of Blackberry have color displays and the number of features offered on the Blackberry continue to evolve.
Blackberries are also used as personal organizers, as they are capable of maintaining an electronic address book, to-do lists, calendars and more. To make their use even easier, Blackberries also have built in keyboards, making it far easier to type in text messages with a Blackberry than with a traditional mobile telephone. In addition, the keyboard is set up to be easy to type on with only the use of the thumbs.
Blackberries are also an excellent alternative to mobile phones when it comes to text messaging, as some don’t even require having mobile phone service coverage. In addition, they are Wi-Fi compatible, which is very useful for businesspeople using the Blackberry in order to maintain access to their email as they travel. With the help of the Blackberry, businesspeople can remain continually updated and in contact with their clients no matter where they may be.
