A First Hands-On Look at the BlackBerry Curve 8520

A New “Low End” BlackBerry That Rocks?!

Rumors of a new BlackBerry with the codename “Gemini” have been running around the interwebs since early 2009, evolving slightly with every new blog post made about it. After some back and forth on device model number (previously labeled as the  8325 after some initial confusion), the prevailing thought on what has been now named the BlackBerry 8520 is that would it would be a new “low end” EDGE-only addition to the popular Curve line. In other words, the Curve 8520 was not something to get too excited about.

However, this changed after seeing the first live shots of the BlackBerry Curve 8520 surface this past week, which showed off a slick looking device with the traditional trackball replaced in favor of an optical one… the “Gemini” was officially now a device we couldn’t wait to learn more about. And good news – it didn’t take us long to get our CrackBerry-addicted hands on one. So grab a bevvy, sit back, and read on to see plenty of photos, a video and our initial impressions on the newest Curve.

* Disclaimer: Like all of our pre-release reviews, please note that this is non-commercially available device which means things could change by the time it comes to market. *

BlackBerry Curve 8520

If you saw this forum post the other week or listened to our last podcast, you’ll know that we’ve been starting to get a better idea of what the “Gemini” is all about. And thanks to these first live photos, now you can see it for yourself!!!

As it’s currently labeled on the Options > About screen, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 features some new innovations from Research in Motion, including an “optical trackball” (so long sticky balls!) and dedicated media player buttons. The Curve 8520 has an updated look too: on the front of the device the LCD protector sort of extends down over the buttons for a more polished appearance; the perimeter of this new Curve is rubberized (rubber coated buttons) and the whole device has that swanky blacked-out look from factory.

Despite the lack of 3G, all-in-all this is looking like a pretty nice extension to the Curve line. It’s definitely a device I can’t wait to get my hands on (optical trackball?!!) and try. Be sure to post your reactions in the comments!

We can’t wait to get our hands on this one!

Blackberry Gemini specs
The Blackberry Gemini, which is scheduled to be released in 11 weeks, has finally had its specifications revealed for those who want to know what is in store for the next Blackberry model, formerly known as the BlackBerry Curve 8520.

The Gemini is the newest upcoming smartphone from Blackberry and will have a 2.64in LCD screen with QVGA resolution, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, video recording capabilities, Wifi, and a 2 megapixel camera, which is standard for the Blackberry model line.

It will also be equipped with a decent battery life of 17 days on standby and 2.4 hours of talk time, and features the RIM body shape.

For those worried about space, the 109 x 60 x 12.9mm smartphone will contain 256MB of memory which can be expanded an additional 32GB with the purchase of a microSDHC expansion card.

It also has the ability to support up to ten different email accounts which is also standard on most upcoming Blackberry models.

The model supports a large variety of codes that should fit most users’ needs but oddly enough the Blackberry Gemini does not support 3G networks or come with a GPS service.

The Gemini will hit store shelves and contract plans in the middle of August.

RIM’s vice president of product management, Carlo Chiarello, stated that the Blackberry Curve 8520 (Gemini) is a nice gateway mobile device for those who are deciding if it is time to upgrade to a smartphone from a basic mobile.
