Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 beta update features BBM Integration, Likes notifications and more

Plenty of Facebook users have been waiting for it, and we had a pretty good feeling it was coming today. That said; Facebook v2.0 is now available for download for both BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook. As noted from RIM:

We are pleased to announce the availability of Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 today in BlackBerry App World. Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook was the first optimized tablet Facebook application that offers users a highly engaging experience with access to popular features such as Facebook chat, video uploading and Places.

New features include:

  • Facebook Places – Users choose to share where they are, what they are doing and who they are with – with Facebook friends. Get directions to and from a Facebook Places by clicking on the map image, which will seamlessly launch the Bing! Maps on the BlackBerry Playbook.
  • Facebook Events – View events and birthdays and receive notifications of new invitations. View event details like the time, place, guest list and more. Users can even RSVP and write on the event’s Wall.
  • View ‘Likes’ – See the names of the friends that ‘liked’ a user’s post. Users will also be able to tap their friends’ names to launch directly to their profiles.
  • Privacy control on status updates – Control who can see each update users share. Simply click the lock icon in the lower-right corner of the status publisher to select who to make the status update visible to before posting it.

Also available today in BlackBerry App World, is the official Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0 app. Thanks to user feedback on the beta, this next generation app includes a sleek new user interface and many new features based on customer feedback, including Facebook Chat.

Fire up BlackBerry App World now and grab it — if you’re not seeing it as of yet try refreshing your applications list or sideloading it directly from the BlackBerry App World webstore online.

BlackBerry Soft Reset

The other day, I was helping one of my friends get better acquainted with his new BlackBerry Torch. He’s no stranger to BlackBerry, he had one before I did. In fact, if you go back and look at my CrackBerry Idol audition, he’s the one with the 8820 who told me to get a BlackBerry.  Without that bit of advice, I never would have joined the CrackBerry Team. The other day, he asked me to show him how to restart his smartphone without pulling the battery. Needless to say, I forgot to show him how before I headed home; but that got me thinking. He’s probably not the only one wondering how to do this; so B (and everyone else), this post is for you.

Most people know that removing the battery from your BlackBerry is a perfectly acceptable way to reset the BlackBerry. There is another way. A soft reset will accomplish the same thing as pulling the battery but without all the hassle of taking your BlackBerry out of its case, removing the battery door, pulling the battery, waiting for a few seconds, replacing the battery, replacing the battery cover, and returning the device to its protective case.

Incidentally, a “soft” reset is not a kinder, gentler way to restart your BlackBerry. Soft, in this case, means the device is reset by the SOFTware. A “hard” reset involves pulling the battery, a HARDware reset. To accomplish this soft reset, you’ll hold three keys down all at the same time. On your keyboard, press and hold the ALT key, press and hold the right SHIFT key, and press DEL. In my mind, this is almost the same as pressing Control-Alt-Delete to restart a Windows PC (at least it once did).  Unfortunately for Storm and Pearl users, this soft reset is only possible on devices with QWERTY keyboards.

Though the reset starts immediately; at first, it won’t appear that anything has happened. Don’t worry, it has. The screen freezes and you won’t be able to use the device (because it’s resetting). After a moment, the screen will go blank and that comforting red LED will turn on letting you know that screen won’t be blank for long. After a few moments, you’ll be back in business with a refreshed BlackBerry, and you didn’t even have to touch the battery.

Therapy Studio

Hey. How are you doing? Did you have a bad day? I’m sorry to hear that. Why don’t you sit back and relax while I start playing some relaxing, soothing sounds to calm your nerves.

Sounds pretty good right? Here’s the thing- it’s not a person saying that to you – it may just be your BlackBerry. An application called Therapy Studio could be right up your alley if you need a few minutes to disengage from a stressful situation. It provides a dozen tunes and sound effects that can be enjoyed individually, or up to a combination of three simultaneously. These sounds include a creek, chimes, a singing bird and crickets. You can choose the duration of each loop and their start times – making it a truly personal, relaxing experience. A timer is also included so you know when to leave LaLa land and get back to the daily grind. Therapy Studio also has a free version available, but it’s a lot less relaxing. What I mean is the lite version has a greatly reduced number of sounds to choose from. You also don’t have access to the help menu, where it’s said you can learn which sounds can be used in certain circumstances and how to get obtain optimal relaxation. If you want to grab the full version of Therapy Studio, you can pick it up for $1.99 from the CrackBerry AppStore.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Word is in that BlackBerry Desktop Manager (PC version) has updated to v6.1.0.35 and should be available for download. This version adds some fixes and it looks like support for BlackBerry OS 7 is built in as well. Most users are reporting they are prompted to update when they open up Desktop Manager, but a few have said they had to manually check for updates. Regardless, it should be available for all so get to downloading! Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.1 adds new features and important enhancements to media and synchronization:

  • You can use the new Files feature to manage your files between your smartphone and computer.

From BlackBerryFAQ

1. On your BlackBerry, go to the Address Book.

2. Open it and click (or press Menu on 8100, 8800, 8300)

to see SIM Phone Book.

3. Click SIM Phone Book. The list of your SIM contacts will appear.

  • From here you have 2 options:
 a) You may choose to highlight one contact and click to
ADD TO ADDRESS BOOK

OR

 b) You can COPY ALL TO ADDRESS BOOK. If you have a
 great number of contacts,
this may take a while, be patient.
  • Please note that SIM contacts will ONLY contain one phone number per contact entry. Your BB Address Book will have a different arrangement with one Contact Name and several fields of information (Cell phone, Work Phone, Home Phone, email address, etc.) All you SIM contacts will copy to the BB Address Book as separate contacts. You will need to edit each, copy and paste phone numbers from one entry to a main entry. This is best done by syncing your BB back to a program such as MS Outlook where you can use a PC to more easily edit the address book, then sync back to your BlackBerry to update it.
  • It is by default that ALL contacts from your SIM card will copy to your BB Address Book as “Work Phone”. This cannot be changed, you will need to edit the information to arrange it correctly.

Mac

Those of you looking to tether your BlackBerry to your Mac look no further. RIM has published an article with a step-by-step of just how to do it. The article How to set up an IP modem using Bluetooth on an Apple Macintosh computer has plain and simple steps to get the job done.

A BlackBerry smartphone with tethered modem over Bluetooth® capabilities can be used as an external modem to connect an Apple Macintosh computer to the Internet. To set up an Internet Protocol (IP) modem over Bluetooth on an Apple Macintosh computer, complete the following tasks.

The full article can be found in the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center. This is a simple solution for Mac users, yet many don’t know how to set it up or never cared to try. If you have tested out this method, be sure to leave a comment and let us know your findings.

Why you Unlock Blackberry ?

Your Blackberry was supplied to you in a ‘locked’ condition, restricting your ability to use SIM cards from other cell phone providers locally and/or worldwide. If you are like many Blackberry users, you use your Blackberry almost everywhere you go -
at work, lunch, meetings, traveling, or at home…in the ‘locked’ condition you are not able to use your Blackberry on the
best networks with the best rates, and so, you are missing out on being able to take full advantage of your Blackberry phone’s capabilities.

This being said, you want to unlock your GSM Blackberry for the following reasons:

1) You want to switch between local service providers:
Whether its for a cheaper rate plan or a better network, you want to switch between local providers
and still be able to use your current Blackberry.
Ie: In U.S.A from Cingular to T-MOBILE; In Canada from Rogers to Fido

2) You’re traveling to a different country:
Traveling outside your country for work or pleasure, and don’t want to have to pay
the very expensive international rates your present wireless company would charge you, plus roaming fees
while using your current Blackberry phone.

3) You’re selling your Blackberry:
The value of your Blackberry will be worth a lot more and be easier to sell
because it is not restricted for use with only one wireless provider – anyone will be able to use it,
allowing for a wider range of prospective buyers.

Every Blackberry has its very own distinctive serial number called an IMEI.
To find your IMEI number, push the sequence *#06# using your Blackberry keypad (you do not need to be on any particular screen to do this). Or, you can also find it printed on a sticker on the back of your phone when you remove your battery.
This IMEI number is what we will need to provide you with a personalized unlock code, generated specifically for your Blackberry phone.

Memory Optimization Procedure (MOP)

Our Consumer BlackBerrys come packed full of features, samples, themes and support for highly sophisticated communications. It makes for a great, out of the box experience. It also represents the working limits of the device. The geeks had to stop somewhere, or there would be no free memory at all.

In order to run smoothly, our ‘berrys needs roughly 12,000,000 of free space. If it drops much lower, built in low memory programs kicks in and cleans up. It does a great job, clears out all it’s temporary files, but it doesn’t stop there. It also clears out logs files, messages and past calender entries.

The best defence is a regular back up. The cure is removing the memory consuming stuff.

The simplest way is to do in stages:

Finally, a week after the PlayBook launched in the US and Canada, we start to see some advertising on televison in the form of commercials. The focus of this 30 second ad is the portability and power of the PlayBook. I’m sure this is just the first of many commercials we’ll see for the device, though I for one still find it a bit odd that it took so long to even get this one out. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

CrackBerry.com’s Review of the BlackBerry PlayBook – the first BlackBerry tablet from Research In Motion!

BlackBerry PlayBook Review

Officially announced in September of last year, the long-awaited BlackBerry PlayBook finally goes on sale April 19th, with a starting price of $499. Featuring the all-new BlackBerry Tablet OS, the PlayBook sports a 7″ display that makes this tablet more portable for everyday use than Apple’s iPad.

With solid hardware specs, an operating system that utilizes a gesture-based user interface to deliver true multitasking capabilities and a web browser that supports Adobe Flash, on paper the PlayBook appears to have the raw talent to be a contender. Heck, it even won the first ever Tablet World Series before it was ever released. But pre-release hype is one thing and real-world performance is another. RIM hopes to leverage their success in smartphones and emerge as a major competitor in the tablet game when it steps up to the plate. Does the PlayBook have what it takes to crank out a homerun?
